International Jazz Day Madrid 2018

Thanks to La Noche Al Vivo, The World Jam and the City Hall of Madrid and with the support of Cervezas Alhambra, the capital hosted from Monday 23 April until Wednesday 2 May, the first edition of the International Jazz Day with a participation of 6000 people. During 10 days, Madrid was transformed into a great urban scene, accommodating more than 50 concerts with musicians such as José Barrios, Marina Lledó, Cameron Graves, Jorge Pardo, Pat Martino Trio, The Nels Cline 4 feat. Julian Lage, Tom Rainey and Jorge Roeder, Niño Josele, Elizabeth Shepherd, Lady & the Tramps, Elon Turgeman, Ernesto Aurignac, Marc Ribot, Jaby Sanchez Quartet, Vaudi Jazz Brazil, Leonel o’Zuñiga & Havana Street Ban, Liss Da Silva, Afrojam … Jams, master classes, dance classes, lectures, presentations and exhibitions programmed in the framework of the world celebrations of the International Jazz Day (April 30) proclaimed by the UNESCO Earth Sciences & Geohazards Risk Reduction in 2011 .

Teachers

ALBA MENGUAL

She is a dancer and the cofounder of ESpanish Blues Festival, she will also be a dance teacher in the International Jazz Day. After a the long period of time she spent learning in London she came back to Madrid and became the director of Big Mama Swing.

Mengual is jazz lover and a professional in dance styles such as Lindy Hop, Blues or Balboa and authentic jazz. You can’t miss this opportunity to see her passion, kindness and friendliness that characterise her dancing style on stage.

GAS

Gastón Fernández is one of the dance teacher that will be in the International Jazz Day. He was born in Argentina and took up Lindy hop in 2001, since then, his passion has only grown bigger. He is co-director of Big Mama Swing (with his colleague Alba Mengual) and organiser of Brothers in Jazz festival. Gas possesses a unique blues and slow dance technique that will make you fall in love with bots of these styles.

JUAN VILLAFANE

Juan Villafañe is one of the most representative figures of vintage dance today. His beginnings go back to his youth, beginning with other styles until he decided to emigrate to Europe to study with the best Swing and Lindy Hop professionals. He is the founder of the dance company “The Killer Dillers”, with which he managed to position himself at the top of the most important competitions in the US within the Lindy Hop world.

NATHAN BUG

Nathan Bugh is a well-known dancer on the international scene within the world of jazz dance. Throughout his career, he has gone through scenes of great importance, starting the list from the Apollo Theater to Carnegie Hall in New York. He has also participated in several projects as a dancer for television, coming to work for large producers such as FoxNC.

Based in New York, this dancer has achieved the first place in numerous competitions within the Lindy division, Slow Dancing, Solo Charleston, and Cabaret. He won the Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown (2012) and the International Lindy Hop Championships (2014).

GORDON WEBSTER BAND

The New Yorker pianist comes back to Madrid as one of the main artists of the Inernational

Jazz Day. Gordon is one of the most important musicians in the Swing and Jazz worldwide. This time, you have the opportunity to see him on stage and enjoy his art and passion of his music.

MICHAEL GAMBLE

Michael Gamble and the Rhythm Serenaders are a swing dance group known by their style, loyal to the origins or their style. This exceptional band’s music will take you back to the 30s and 40s. After 15 years immersed in this world, Michael Gamble and the Rhythm Serenaders are coming to Madrid to infect you with their energy and joy inherent to the 50s American jazz. If you like swing and praise jazz, this is your band.

ENRIC PEIDRO

Enric Peidro, who is one of the most influential Spanish jazz musician, will be coming to Madrid for the International Jazz Day. Peidro, flattered by the critics, will make you fall in love with Jazz and his music using his extraordinary tenor saxophone style. All along his career, he has collaborated with many Jazz stars, he even launched his debut work in 2011. This album received outstanding critics and it includes a collaboration with the tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton.

CUNNINGHAM

Joined by New York based and awarded 3 consecutive years with the Audience Award at the Swing Music Awards. The group has been together since late 2012 and has already performed at Boston Swing Central, Club Helsinki, Swingeasy (NYC), BABBLE, Gypsy Jam, Swing Remix. They perform twice a month at the well-known and loved NYC swing dance venue SWING 46.

MOLINO BIG BAND

El Molino band has become one of the main bands original from Madrid. El Molino, was first created by the North American musician Bob Sands, one of most valued saxophonists in Madrid.

This band is composited by both professional jazz musicians and amateur jazz lovers. Since it was created 7 years ago, El Molino has been working daily to get to improve their music and their repertory typical from the 30s and 50s Big Bands.

SWING GODFATHERS

Swing Godfathers appeared as part of a project of the saxophonist Daniel Grammauta. We can distinguish this band due to its specific style which reminds us of the first Big Bands born in New Orleans. The saxophone, jazz guitar and its wind instruments combination create an atmosphere that takes the spectator to the 30s and 40s decades. Its repertory is based on old party hits. Its great personality made it gain a foothold in the Madrid jazz world.

 

Local Heroes Tour

We have BIG news today!! We are thrilled to announce that from 14th – 19th of May 2018, The World Jam will be organize its first National Tour: Local Heroes. In partnership with several Jazz & Swing festivals, we will visit multiple cities across Spain promoting the spirit of the world jam: Improvisation, collaboration, education… and fun!
